Calm in the midst of chaos

Inner freedom and peace are not about reaching a perfectly tranquil, problem-free state of life. It’s about being calm in the midst of chaos. Having clarity in the midst of confusion. Feeling confident in the presence of self-doubt.

I used to think that that I’d feel at peace when I was on top of all of my flows and inhibitions. When I resolved all of my problems and was well on track to creating the life I’d love to live.

In other words, I thought that being at peace meant never experiencing inner turmoil, discomfort, setbacks or pain.

But the expectation — that life should present only pleasant and comfortable opportunities and occasions — is unrealistic. And it’s having that expectation that robs us of peace.

Because being at peace is not about living in a vacuum of a life devoid of challenges and hardship, but about feeling at peace in the midst of challenges and hardship.

It’s not about restructuring chaos into perfect order, but about feeling calm in the midst of chaos. This is what I see as resilience and psychological flexibility. Not attempting to control life that’s by virtue uncontrollable, but creating the ability to be with whatever life presents.
